Now before I say anything more, I know a few people on my friends list have hearing aids and/or concerns about their hearing. I am NOT belittling or mocking this at all.
As you may have gathered from reading this blog, my dear and loyal 0.5 of a reader, I occasionally scarper down to a public house at lunchtimes. It is good to sit amidst the dark wood and polished brass of an old style pub and chill out.
I arrived this lunchtime in the Angel and frontled up to the bar, which is a manoeuvre much like “sidling” but more direct. Brendan got me my drink and I sat down in a quiet corner.
As I do on every visit there, on seating myself with my drink I placed my magazine in front of me, my drink next to it, placed my mobile on the other side and popped my earphones in my ears and hit play. Now the music in the pub is a bit average, and the mp3s help to drown out the conversations about work that you have to put up with at lunchtimes.
Now when I go to the bar, I notice something odd. I normally have at least one of my earphones in when I go back up, and I can see that the staff actually enunciate with a bit more clarity – they think I can’t hear them as I have my headphones in so they assume I am having to lip read over Pitchshifter or whoever is playing. As I said I normally have one earphone out so I can actually hear, but they always assume I am “lost in music”.
On the way back to the office I started to wonder if this is the way people behave when they see they are talking to someone with a hearing aid? Or are we becoming used to having to deal with people who are plugged into some sort of portable entertainment and too rude to take the earphones out?
Ahem.
